GRIMNIR STARES down at his left hand, clenched into a fist. He opens it, long fingers uncurling. His gaze picks out hieroglyphs of pale scar tissue. Each one tells a tale in itself. A battle fought; a foe ended. A life snatched away by iron’s edge. Even that one, the jagged scar in the heel of his left hand. Though it is long healed, Grimnir knows its origins: it was carved by his own blade, to get blood. Grimnir’s brows furrow. Blood that he then smeared on the surface of the eight stones he’d found in the valley of the Avon River, more than three hundred years before.

“It cannot be…” he mutters. And in the cloud-draped heavens, behind the fume and broil rising from Múspellsheimr and Jötunheimr, Yggðrasil trembles in answer.
